Step-By-Step Guide to Achieving Royal Curls

NYC’s Mure Salon is revealing how to recreate the Duchess of Cambridge's barrel curls!

Kate Middleton was recently photographed paying her respects to those who had died in the war as part of Remembrance Sunday in Whitehall, London. Apart from her quilted buttoned-up Temperley London peacoat being the talk of the town, both the media and clients were buzzing about her beautiful, brunette barrel curls. This was one of her softer looks, yet elegant and glam and surprisingly easy to recreate. You can dress them up with a headband or hairpiece, or you can wear them casually with jeans and a t-shirt.

Here is the Upper East side guide on recreating this regal look.

Step 1: Blow-dry the hair upside down and away from the face with a paddle brush. For this look, it is vital to achieve root lift by blowing the hair up and off the face, as volume is key.

Step 2: Once your hair is completely dry, part your hair at your own preference. A side part is a flattering option for the majority of facial structures, whereas a middle part is trendy and really tends to fit faces that are more narrow and symmetrical.

Step 4: Divide the hair into two sections, separating the hair closer to the crown from the hair underneath. Secure the section of the hair that is closer to the crown with clips.

Step 5: Let the royal curling begin. For thick hair, use a curling iron with a two-inch barrel, and for fine hair use a one-inch barrel. Start at the temple and work your way towards the nape of the neck, taking diagonal sections and curling the hair away from the face. Make sure to let hair cool between each section, and refrain from touching the curls until the end. Repeat this step once you unpin the hair close to the crown of your head.

Step 6: Once you have finished curling, allow the hair to completely cool before gently pulling the curls to loosen them.

Don’t forget to finish the look off with a light hair spray!

Changing Hair Color with the Leaves

Now that we are well into fall and the leaves are changing colors – don’t get left behind; keep up with the Upper East Side autumnal hues! While the sunny highlights are perfect for your summer glow, you’re more likely to opt for warmer and richer tones for the change of the season to help balance out your fading tans. Mure Salon has opened its doors to welcome new change for your hair, no matter how subtle or drastic you are willing to go. Here’s what we suggest:

For Brunettes – dark brown/black hair:
From light chestnut to deep espresso, there are endless shades of browns that can be fabulous for fall. If you have pale skin, consider adding some highlights around the frame of your face, no lighter than caramel or copper, which will help warm up a dull complexion and add dimension. Add a brown/red gloss that is the same shade as your existing hair, which can help you adjust tone, add shine, or deepen the hair color to give it that extra bit of warmth without committing to a drastic change.
Ombré continues to be a major trend, and don’t forget there are various techniques to executing this look. You can either opt for a drastic two-tone or a subtle color fade just two shades lighter.

For Blondes:
Who said that blonde is just for the beach?
Although blonde hair is generally correlated with spring and summer seasons, there are ways to add a bit of autumnal fusion and remain true to yourself! As your tan begins to fade for fall, avoid a bright, buttery blonde tint that will wash you out. If you are an icy, bright blonde, consider glossing over your hair with a warmer gloss to give it a sandy shade.  If you feel that your bleached highlights have begun to fuse together, consider adding honey low-lights in between to break up the solid color. Doing so will add dimension to your hair, as well as bring out the warmer tones in your skin.

For Redheads:
Never fear the fiery red – surprisingly, this color is actually very wearable, and adds a striking appearance against similar shades of leaves. If you considering joining the red-headed family, it is best to opt for a shade in the strawberry-champagne side – not too drastic or startling of a transformation, but it will give your complexion some rosy warmth. Auburn is always a popular fall choice, because it is the perfect blend of brown and red and looks flattering on all skin tones. From burnt sienna to rich mahogany, you can rock the autumn look with either light or olive skin. Keep in mind that red tends to oxidize with sun exposure – now you can rock any shade of red, without the fear of losing the rich pigment!
