Fishtail Braid – NYC Style

Even weeks after the Emmy’s aired, showcasing television’s hottest stars and their style, celebrities like Heidi Klum, Claire Danes, Kerry Washington still remain the talk of the town. Many clients have come into our salon asking to recreate their trendy dos, but not surprisingly, one look out-shined them all.

The teased and textured, high-fashion fishtail worn by Extra host Maria Menounos has Mure Hair Salon clients flocking into the salon to replicate her look! The fishtail braid (also known as the herringbone or fish bone braid) may appear elaborate, time-consuming and even scary to attempt, but it is shockingly easy to recreate. After mastering our 5 simple steps, we guarantee it will become the next go-to style for your next night out in town.

Maria Menounos proved that a typical weekend style can also work well on the red carpet.
She opted for a softer braid, by swinging her fishtail braid loosely over one shoulder,
and adding extra volume on top with some wispy strands at the front.

1.     Part your hair straight down the middle, dividing it hair into two large sections: For a clean-cut, even look you can use a comb to part your hair; however, if you decide to opt for the tousled look, simply create the part with your fingers instead.

2.     Pull a thin strand of hair from the outside of the left section. Pull it over the top of the left section, and grasp it under the right section. The strand of hair has gone over the left section and comes through under the right section. Keep in mind to use the same amount of hair for each strand throughout or your braid will look uneven. The skinnier the strands, the more intricate the braid!

3.     Repeat directions on the right side. Pull a skinny strand of hair from the outside of the right section, pull it over the right section, and then weave it under the left section.

4.     Alternate sides, weaving over and under. Keep up the rhythm of crisscrossing strands until you reach the bottom of the braid. You can chose to go for a more traditional look, by ending it at the very tip, or you can spice up the braid Mure-Salon- style by tying it halfway down the ponytail!

5.     Secure the end tightly with an elastic band. You can even add a fancy ribbon, barrette or charm to give it the personality that you decide.

But it doesn’t end there! Now, Mure Salon is revealing exclusive secrets on how to take the traditional fishtail to the very next level – Upper East Side style!

Weave pieces of yarn into your braid!

1.     Tie yarn to one layer of hair at the root. Tease the roots at the top to help the yarn stay.
2.     Braid the pieces in with the same technique as seen above. Make sure to various colors and textures. 3.     Trim the excess pieces of yarn, and wrap off the end with a yarn piece for an added touch.
